Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure (b.k.a. pain) of going to my dentist’s office and got three of my wisdom teeth removed. Why three? It’s because my mouth was too small for the last one to be removed (said the oral surgeon). I have a conspiracy theory: I think he just got too tired.
All of my wisdom teeth are apparently impacted. A couple of weeks ago, I’ve also been having some jaw and teeth pain. I think I’ve put off this extraction for way too long (I waited 5 years). I wished I’ve done it back in high school or during my summer break in college, instead of me having to work back to back shifts to make sure I have enough time to recover.
The surgery in itself went well (I think). I only went through local anesthesia. A deep part inside me wanted general anesthesia, or at least laughing gas. The oral surgeon took about 2 hours to take out all three of my impacted wisdom teeth. Apparently, my mouth was too small and I was a very complicated case. One of my wisdom tooth had roots that are split (see picture below). This gave the surgeon such a hard and excruciating time. Seriously, I felt that he was going to pull me off the chair. Thank goodness for anesthesia. The other two teeth needed to be drilled to bits. No amount of Youtube videos could have prepared me from my own experience.
The most horrible part of getting your wisdom teeth removed was definitely this recovery period. My cheeks were swollen and in pain. Ice packs and pain killers instantly became my best friends. My jaw literally squared off. It hurts to laugh, smile, talk. My diet consisted of ice cream and pudding. I thought having an ice cream diet is a dream… but nope.
Food I Can Eat Post-Wisdom Teeth:
- Ice cream
- Super soft pasta
- Mushy rice
- Mashed potatoes
- Baked fish (like salmon)
- Scrambled eggs
Basically anything that doesn’t require chewing. Once the swelling went down (Day 4 and 5), I can start chewing at the front of my teeth. But there are foods that I am craving. I will definitely go on a massive food adventure (Brazilian steakhouse and Japanese BBQ?) once I’m fully recovered.
Food I Miss Eating:
- Chicken wings
I would never take the word “texture” for granted when it comes to talking about food. I have a deeper appreciation not only for the taste of food, but for the feel of it as well!
I’m recovering well for the most parts. Majority of the swelling has gone down. Whenever I over-work my mouth, I would take my NSAID.
I’m just praying I wouldn’t have to come back to get my last wisdom teeth removed.
Hope you had a better week than me,
